The exact ancestry of the Otterhound is uncertain, but there is a number of theories suggesting it is descended from various bloodhounds, mastiffs, foxhounds, bearded shepherds, harriers, terriers, griffons and water spaniels. This powerful working breed has been used for hunting otters since the 1100's, but it also makes a capable large game hunter, watchdog and rural companion. The Otterhound is a tall and massive dog, with a muscular body, sturdy legs, powerful neck and a large head. Even though the Otterhound is devoted to its master and loving of children, it is only moderately popular as a family pet. Kept primarily as working hunters, Otterhounds are excellent swimmers and are healthy, resilient and strong dogs, perfectly suited for both the outside and indoor life. However, they can be quite strong-willed and territorial, needing proper socialization and training.

The weatherproof double coat is thick and rough, coming in all colours. Average height is around 27 inches.

They are a non-shedding breed. However, like some rough terriers, you might need to strip the coat. I am not sure though. I do know they do not need clipping.

It's unfortunate that they are so rare. I think it would be a good idea for breeders to out cross to Airdale terrier and blood hound.

Apparently when on the scent/hunt the otter hound will become so fixated on the task in hand will ignore all commands .
Apparently this stubborn trait or tenacity was so strong the otterhound was outcrossed into many breeds i have heard this from a source whom have been breeding dogs for decades anybody else heard similar.?

I didn't know that lots of otterhounds had that behavior problem. I read that its very common in bloodhounds. The two breeds are very closely related so its not surprising that otterhounds tend to have that problem too.

Do you know which breeds the otter hound was usually crossed with?

Why is dedication to a task at hand a behavioral problem? Being strong willed is not a behavior problem, its a degree of mental toughness rarely seen anymore.

Mike, I don't see where anyone said it was a behavioral problem. It could be that they outcross was done to give the other breed some of the intense focus of the otterhound. Not sure though.

Yes Cindy - Mike is Right on his point.
"I didn't know that lots of otterhounds had that behavior problem. I read that its very common in bloodhounds" I misunderstood the point.

Mountainbull - that level of intensity is not a problem at all - it is an asset to be used.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary

As gary and others have stated this was what made the otter hound THE otter hunter it was.
Otters are formidable predators for their size and the dog needed to be of such steely determination that once on the scent there was no backing down.
Interestingly not name dropping just recalling a story my wife overheard being told allegedly by the late brian plummer that otterhound blood was introduced into pitbulls and terriers to add this specific characteristic .
Any thoughts on this.

Otterhound definitely features heavily in the airedale terrier (basically just an otterhound x terrier), never heard of it being in pitbull though, who knows. Totally possible it's there in a tiny percentage

tonedog i dont know whether it was suggested that it was in the make up of pitts or that mr plummer had introduced it into dogs for the reason i suggested , he was into the dog scene in many aspects the reason my wife got to hear this was family friends have bred bullmastiffs for 50 years mr plummer attempted i believe to recreate the old english alaunt and used these friends to add bullmastiff blood.
How he got on im not sure but being the creator of the plummer terrier iis his greatest achievement to witness these dogs ratting is awesome their aptitude for this job is incredible .
But the look of otterhounds the coat etc i would of thought hard to weed out once introduced but who knows iv,e seen a presa x american bulldog litter look like large jack russells lol.?
