| Guest | the breed description is from the MD breed profile "The Toulouse Bulldog was a taller and leaner variety of the Bouledogue du Midi, resembling a slimmer Spanish Bulldog or a heavier Deutsche Dogge. Once a popular fighting and baiting dog in France, the Bouledogue Toulousain is now extinct, having been assimilated into the Dogue de Bordeaux breed in the late 1800's. On top of its "sport" duties, the Toulouse Dogue was also a valued and ferocious property guardian, unchained in the evenings to patrol the estate. A large and powerful mastiff of the bullenbeisser type, this old breed is believed by some to be a result of introducing the Alano Espanol to France, while others link it to the dogs of Germany. Actually, its "bulldog" name is a misnomer, because this was a typical "dogue" or "dogge", along the lines of the early Great Danes or taller Bandogges. The Toulouse Dogge was the tallest of French mastiffs, but many authors have wrongly described it as the same thing as the Bouledogue the Midi, which belonged to the smaller variety of bullenbeissers, alongside the Doguin d'Aquitaine. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Bouledogue Toulousain disappeared completely and has remained a largely forgotten French breed. Unlike the boxer-like muzzle of the Midi Bulldog, this long-legged mastiff had a slightly longer nose and narrower head, with a powerful neck and muscular body." in my former topic i have showed a wonderful dog of toulouse type. i would now like to compare it to the breed profile to see how close the breed profile is to the dog of toulouse type we can see in the picture. it is interesting as i have seen different breed profiles which are contradictory. (some say it was heavier build, some say the opposite) so i guess the pic shows the best what´s true and what isn´t. beside that i know that the ddb was inconsistent in type, but as we have definitions of different types it should be more consistent within the different types. "The Toulouse Bulldog was a taller and leaner variety of the Bouledogue du Midi, resembling a slimmer Spanish Bulldog or a heavier Deutsche Dogge." it is difficult to say how a heavier Deutsche Dogge looks like, because if it only was heavier then it still would be a dog that is much to large compared with the dogue of toulouse type i have posted. i think a "slimmer Spanish Bulldog" describes it better as there are paintings of spanish bulldogs which show heavier dogs like the one i have posted, but they also have a similar head (flat and broad with a proper muzzle) next quote: "this long-legged mastiff had a slightly longer nose and narrower head, with a powerful neck and muscular body." powerful head and muscular body i agree with, but i think "long-legged" doesn´t fit to a dog of 63cm. (but i guess long-legged means in proportion to the the rest of the build) here again the pic to compare ![]() and here another description of the head: "THE TOLOUSAIN HAD A LARGE STRONG HEAD WITH LESS STOP, AND A SLIGHTLY DOWN-FACING LONGER MUZZLE. CAPORAL, ONE OF THE EARLIEST AND MOST FAMOUS DOGUES, WAS OF TOLOUSAIN TYPE." source: -link- SO MY QUESTION TO YOU IS, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE TOULOUSE TYPE AND WHERE DO YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH BREED PROFILES OF IT |

It's a pitty the top pic is so small but you can see that it has a shorter bulldog type muzzle compared to above longer type muzzle. The above image is very much like a Pressa Canario to me ! | Guest | the picture here in the breed profile is no Toulouse Bulldog, it is a Spanish Bulldog. however both breeds were very close related. (only small local differences) @ Scralette in some ddb you still will find the toulouse type. |

| Guest | Picture a head that's between a Dane and a Pit. That would be the Toulouse style dog, not the Pug-faced stuff. |
