I am looking for a bigger size dog ,good with family and people if possible, not dog agressive ,possibly biddable and loyal.Possibly easy to train and healthy and long lived. I know I am a bit all over the place but I just started looking and I am trying to narrow my search as much as possible .

Thanks to all

A Labrador Retriever may work for you.

huge breeds live short.. I was about to suggest you st bernard, but since u said long lived, the breed which is coming to my mind now is a nice show bred great pyrenees or greater swiss mountain dog.. pick the swissie!! they r big, sweet looking and also manageable.. n quite trainable too..

if u r not particular on mastiff like head n things, yyou may also consider borzoi (if u think u can handle the exercise needs and take caution when ur dog is off-leash) or shiloh shepherd (it looks like a giant german shepherd) n etc.. If I were in ur place with similar demands, I'd have picked a swiss mountain dog though.. they r sweet, yet protective n very intelligent n tolerant..

I have NO IDEA is this is the type of dog you are looking for or not without knowing more than what is posted above. It really depends upon what you need, desire, and expect from a dog. But, our Linebaugh will be siring a litter soon. If you would like to know more about my program you can visit my site or shoot me a PM. Our dogs are not "giants" though...generally around 90-115# for males...and females about 10-20# less. One concern I would have would be dog aggression though. Many of our dogs are not dog aggressive, but some are. Generally they get along with dogs of opposite sex, but I wouldn't ever leave two dogs of the same sex together unattended. A friend, David Ishi of MidgardMastiffs, has some dogs that run bigger than ours and his dogs also tend to be less dog aggressive than ours. Maybe he could help you out? Either way, if I can or can't...if you give us more information as to what type of dog you like and maybe we can point you in the right direction.

The smaller size it is actually preferred. Not so much the dog aggressive part. The least if at all temperament unpredictability is a must in my choice. I need a companion and rarely a warrior of a deadly type . Loyalty and even temperament, sound ,healthy, calm and secure, but NOT unnecessarily nor unpredictably aggressive.

Have you considered a Dobermann? My impression of them through my job at an animal hospital, is a mentally stable dog, ftiendly and not dog aggressive.

If you have a pool it would be fun watching a Newfoundland trying to rescue the kids lol very much like a lab temperament. Other than that a Great Pyrenees.

isnt that about as good as its going to get as far as dog friendliness and guardian/protection dogs?

I dont see it possible for a dog with the necessary level of aggression for protection to not also have at least some dog aggression, meaning your not going to have a dog that is extremely dog friendly like a golden retriever etc.

What about a Chesapeake Bay Retriever? Many of them have more of an 'edge' than the Labs or Goldens.
